US and trading partners announce anti-piracy enforcement plan.
The United States and several trading partners announced plans Tuesday to move to a "higher benchmark" of enforcement efforts against piracy and counterfeiting in global trade.
US Trade Representative Susan Schwab said Washington and key trade allies will seek to negotiate an Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA).
US officials said the plan would not involve any changes to multilateral trade agreements under the World Trade Organization, but would seek to step up enforcement efforts against counterfeit and pirated goods.
"The goal is to set a new, higher benchmark for enforcement that countries can join on a voluntary basis," according to a statement from Schwab's office.
